COSATU is proposing stricter rules and regulations for road users to help reduce fatalities on Mzansi roads.
They believe the road fatalities which amount to about 14 000 lives every year was a threat to economic survival.
In its proposal document presented to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee hearing of the National Traffic Amendment Bill, the labour federation called for a tougher stance on unroadworthy vehicles and corrupt traffic officials whom it said must be banned from running businesses in the sector.
The federation pointed out that thousands of lives were lost due to reckless driving by those who should not have been licensed to drive in the first place, while 25% were due to drunk driving.
