Spencer Police Department Taking Part in National Drug Takeback Day By charguth April 23, 2021 10:10 am clipart.com Spencer, IA (KICD)– The Spencer Police Department and other local law enforcement agencies will be taking part in the bi-annual National Drug Takeback initiative put together by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Police Chief Mark Warburton tells KICD News was created to give residents a safe way to dispose of unused prescription drugs. Saturday’s national initiative is really only a highlight of the work to get additional drugs off the streets with many agencies, including the Spencer Police Department, accepting unused medications year round.

On Friday, Attorney General Alan Wilson and Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott held a news conference encouraging South Carolinians to go by one of several drop off sites Saturday to drop off unused prescription medications. Officials say the event can prevent dangerous medications from ending up in the wrong hands. Last year South Carolinians dropped off more than 11,000 pounds of medications. (KEYC) — During the pandemic, officials say drug overdoses have skyrocketed, partly due to fentanyl, a deadly fast acting synthetic opioid. In an effort to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic, a group of panelists with Mayo Clinic held a media briefing Wednesday. According to the CDC, more than 87,000 people have died of a drug overdose in the one-year period ending in September 2020.

Drug take back event planned Friday and Saturday

There are two collection sites available 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday. They are:  Harry S. Truman VA Hospital, 800 Hospital Drive, in Columbia; University of Missouri Student Center, 901 Rollins Road in Columbia.  Five collection sites will be available 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. They are:  Ashland Police Department, 601 E. Broadway, in Ashland; Centralia Police Department, 114 S. Rollins, in Centralia; Hallsville Police Department, 202 Highway 124 East, in Hallsville;  Hickman High School, north entrance, at 1104 N. Providence Road, in Columbia;  Rock Bridge High School, north entrance, at 4303 S. Providence Road, in Columbia.  The Boone County Sheriff s Department has joined forces with the Youth Community Coalition and other county law enforcement angencies for this project. The event coincides with the National Drug Take Back event sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency.
