Vaccination to combat COVID-19 : Pavithra

Share: COLOMBO (News1st): The government’s primary strategy to combat COVID-19 is vaccination, health minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has said. Speaking in Parliament, the health minister pointed out that vaccines can be administered after receiving the approval of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority. “We have placed an order for 13 million doses of the Russian Sputnik vaccine,” she said. The minister added that 8.4 million doses of the AztraZeneca vaccine through the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility, and 5 million Pfizer-BioNtech vaccines will be imported this year. “We possess the ability to fully vaccinate more than 60% of our total population before the end of this year,” Wanniarachchi noted.

This statement comes amid growing criticism of the Chinese vaccine China`s Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine will not be given to Sri Lankans until the safety aspect of the vaccine is ensured by the health authorities, the country`s Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has said. In response to questions raised by the Opposition, Pavithra told the Sri Lankan Parliament on Thursday that their regulatory authority had been analyzing data on the vaccine to ensure the safety of the vaccine, Daily Mirror reported. The minister also said that only the Chinese nationals were given the vaccine at present, adding that Sri Lankans will be given only after the World Health Organisation (WHO) approved it for emergency use.
