Toyota HiLux a top target for car thieves Toyota HiLux a top target for car thieves March 12, 2021 Top-selling utes join Commodore as most-stolen vehicles, even as COVID-19 reduces theft rate in 2020 The Toyota HiLux accounted for a high proportion of motor vehicle thefts in Australia in 2020, with car thieves’ perennial favourite, the Holden Commodore, the only model targeted more heavily than the Japanese brand’s top-selling ute. Data for the 2020 calendar year just released by the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) shows that 49,438 thefts were recorded across all vehicle segments, which represents the lowest volume in the two decades since the council’s inception – beating the previous low of 50,277 thefts in 2014.

Despite SA s high crime levels, vehicle theft was on a downward trend in 2020

As South Africans, we often perceive our country as having high crime levels, especially compared to other countries. The Numbeo.com Crime  Index by City 2021 survey demonstrated this, where citizens ranked six South African cities as being among the global top 20 of the most dangerous cities. The respondents perceived the overall level of crime in three South African cities, namely Pretoria, Durban and Johannesburg, as being very high. However, when it comes to vehicle theft, including hijackings, South Africa fares well compared to developed countries. Based on statistics aggregated by Australia s National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) from in-country police and crime reports , at 109, South Africa has one of the lowest rates of vehicle theft per 100 000 population. New Zealand is at the top with a high current theft rate of 636 per 100 000 population.
