SunStar File February 24, 2021 IN CELEBRATION of the 84th Charter Day of Cebu City, SunStar Cebu collected some old and not so old facts about the Queen City of the South, which you may have already known or never heard of at all.
Did you know about these facts?
1. Cebu City is the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines.
Historian William Henry Scott, in his book Looking for the Prehispanic Filipino: and other essays in Philippine history, said that on June 4, 1565, Rajah Tupas, the last Rajah of Cebu, signed the Treaty of Cebu with Spanish navigator Miguel Lopez de Legazpi after being defeated by the colonizers. The treaty made Cebu the first and the oldest Spanish settlement in the Philippines.
Duterte thanked those behind the recent “Run, Sara, Run” social media campaign which saw various platforms inundated with motorcades in different towns across the country. Meanwhile, calendars with the words “Run, Sara, Run for President for 2022” went viral and were said to be circulating in Quezon City.
Speaking to ABS-CBN, Duterte said she understood “where they are coming from. I too am anxious about where we are going as a nation. I am always grateful that I have their trust and confidence.” She urged her supporters to support her run for the presidency in 2034, joking that they would probably forget her by then. Meanwhile, she also warned the public not to spend money on fraudulent fundraising campaigns that claimed to raise money for her alleged candidacy in 2022.
Ez Mil went viral after performing his track ‘Panalo (Trap Cariñosa)’ on the Wish USA bus two weeks ago. The song was initially released in July 2020 as part of his album ‘Act 1’. As of writing, the video has garnered over 39million views on YouTube.
Part of the reason ‘Panalo’ went viral was its historically inaccurate lyrics claiming that historical Philippine hero Lapu-Lapu was beheaded in the 1521 Battle of Mactan – a clash from which Lapu-Lapu and his warriors actually emerged victorious over Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
Though the rapper apologised for the lyric, he later said in a press conference that he would not correct the verse. “I feel like that ruins the integrity that I had within recording it,” he said. “It blew up because it made people talk, and I will let it stay that way.”
