February workplace fatalities climb to 10 after death of workers in Tuas explosion

SINGAPORE: Ten people have died in workplace accidents in Singapore in the last three-and-a-half weeks, after three workers who suffered burns in a fire at an industrial building in Tuas succumbed to their injuries on Thursday (Feb 25).
Speaking at the scene of the Tuas incident on Thursday, National Trades Union Congress assistant secretary-general Melvin Yong raised concerns about the recent spate of workplace accidents and called on the authorities to address potential safety gaps.

Low-wage workers in retail may see their earnings rise if a study to implement the progressive wage model (PWM) in the sector bears fruit.
Salespeople and cashiers in supermarkets, convenience stores and fashion outlets may benefit from the move to extend the PWM to the retail sector, Senior Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad said.
SINGAPORE - Tougher measures are needed to strengthen the Singaporean core of the workforce, such as anti-discrimination legislation, said labour MP Patrick Tay (Pioneer).
Mr Tay, who is also assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), added on Wednesday (Feb 24) that there remains a ground concern that reliance on foreign talent has led to an unnecessary increase in competition in the job market. To safeguard the Singaporean core and curb discriminatory hiring, we must ensure that Singaporean professionals, managers and executives (PMEs) have access to a level-playing field for jobs while balancing companies manpower needs in the immediate and longer term, he said during the Budget debate.
Last week's Budget speech declared the Government's aspiration for every sector of the economy to have some form of progressive wage. That goal is well within sight.
