Indiana weather: Rare spring snow and freezing temps expected

April showers will bring snow to central Indiana on Tuesday, meteorologists predict. With unseasonably colder air traveling from the west, rainfall will change to snow, with the potential for a period of heavier snow bursts and minor accumulations this evening, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.  Though snowfall is diminishing west of the Illinois River, a moderate snow band continues to push eastward. And Indiana isn t alone; the rare spring snow is touching a large swath of the country, from the Rockies to New England. In Indianapolis, new snow accumulation of up to 2 inches are possible, according to the National Weather Service forecast. But heavy bursts of snow are possible between 5-11 p.m., and visibility will likely drop below a quarter mile. After scattered showers Tuesday tonight, widespread frost is expected by Wednesday morning.

Freeze watch in effect through Wednesday morning

6 hrs ago A freeze watch is in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday for portions of west central Indiana including Vigo, Clay, Vermillion, Parke and Sullivan counties. The National Weather Service in Indianapolis predicts temperatures as low as 29 degrees are possible from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Another night of sub-freezing temperatures is likely Wednesday night. Steps should be taken to protect tender plants from the cold, prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes by wrapping, draining or allowing to drip slowly. In-ground sprinkler systems should be drained.

Snow Expected This Week, But Temperatures Warm Back Up By the Weekend STATEWIDE–It is spring, but it appears winter will make a brief appearance in Indiana this week. Snow is expected beginning this Tuesday. “We’re talking about one last hurrah for winter this week,” said WISH-TV meteorologist Stephanie Mead. “There might be some very very minor accumulations of snow up to an inch. There might be an isolated two inches the further north you go into northern Indiana. It is going to be a cold start to the day come Wednesday.” Wednesday will be the coldest day of the week for many places in the state with high temperatures in the 40s and lows in the 30s.
