Adventures in Advertising: That Ford Mach-E Ad with Clark Griswold Lacks Laughs
Todayâs target: Ford.
Like practically everyone, I love
National Lampoonâs Christmas Vacation. It might be my favorite Christmas movie. And I can see why Ford would choose to base an ad around Clark and Ellen Griswold to promote the Mustang Mach-E EV.
I even applaud Ford for getting Chevy Chase and Beverly DâAngelo to partake and play Clark and Ellen in the ad. Too bad neither Johnny Galecki nor Juliette Lewis seemed interested. Or Randy Quaid, for that matter.
The ad, if you havenât seen it, recreates the scene in the movie in which Clark, with an assist from Ellen, finally gets the Christmas lights to work. In this case, the Mustangâs charger also lends a hand. Itâs clever and creative and would make for a great ad. Just one problem â itâs also supposed to be funny. And it isnât.

HORNELL A smiling cowboy, Santa riding an elephant, and a group of red-capped gnomes have become Hornell’s newest neighbors during the Christmas holiday season. They can be found hanging out at homes that Hornell Partners for Growth judged to be the best decorated.
HPG’s judges, including members of the Canisteo-Greenwood senior class, surveyed sparkling scenes across the Maple City last week and found the judging to be tough.
“Our judges were very impressed with all of the houses that decorated this year. They decided that because of the great displays that some of the categories have multiple winners. They also wanted to add a category for Best Decorated Street: Maple Street,” according to HPG chair Michelle Pogue. Approximately 30 outstanding residences received a gift bag containing a Hornell for the Holidays 2020 ornament and a passport to savings card.
ASHLAND, Ky. This is the perfect blend of winter and Christmas creativity.
Believe it or not, a man in Kentucky decided instead of using a shovel to clear the snow from his driveway, a trusty old flamethrower would work even better!
The guy even dressed up as Cousin Eddie from the holiday favorite movie National Lampoon s Christmas Vacation.
That explains why he is only wearing a hat and a bathrobe.
