Jingle bells. Jingle bells. Itâs that time of year again â Christmas! A colorful swirl of sugar plums and light-strung fir trees and flying reindeer and glowing nativity scenes and fat jolly old elves. And holiday movies to put us in the mood.
Iâve compiled my Top 10 Christmas movies list before, but tastes changes, reappraisals are made, and my lists shift slightly. But not this year, aside from developing a guilty pleasure for Hallmark-style Christmas movies. See the accompanying Front Row at the Movies column for that growing list!
So here is last yearâs list again:
10) âHoliday Innâ (1942) â OK, parts of this Bing Crosby-Fred Astaire classic may be unPC by todayâs standards. But it still puts me in the holiday mood to hear Der Bingle crooning âIâm Dreaming of a White Christmas.â At this point we will also throw in âWhite Christmasâ (1954), not perfect, but perfectly touching when Crosby and company sing the title

Each year, many kinds of Christmas cards arrive in mailboxes across the country.
Some are touching, with messages of faith and hope. Some are clever with a tongue-in-cheek take on the holiday season. There are the family photo cards, mass-printed cards from the local store, even some hand-crafted cards.
And then there are the cards sent by the Austin family of New Bedford.
For the last several years the family has taken a more creative approach to holiday cards, often borrowing from well-known movies and holiday scenes.
Both Rob and Bethany are graphic designers and the couple put their skills to good work spreading some cheer every Christmas for more than 10 years.

But now they are calling Gerry and Bonnie Doucette champions.

After 35 years of Christmas lights on their house that would give Clark W. Griswold of ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ a run for his money, they have been bestowed the winners of 2020’s Christmas Lights Contest put on by Ward 20 Councillor Gary Crawford.
“It’s very nice,” Gerry said on Christmas Eve of the honour. “It’s extra special this year with all of the COVID-19 lockdowns. People need something to put a smile on their faces.”

Pioneer Valley High School students raise donations for families in need during special drive-through event
Student leaders at Pioneer Valley High School (PVHS) in Santa Maria organized Holiday Lights, a special drive-through event held on campus on Dec. 12. The event was designed to “give our community a place for the family to see holiday lights and celebrate the season with our PVHS family,” said Lisa Walters, the school’s Panther Activity director, in a press release.

More than 300 vehicles drove through the program, according to the release, and many visitors made donations to benefit local families of students enrolled at PVHS in need.
