This year’s holiday season is unlike any we’ve experienced before. In the age of COVID-19, it’s dangerous to host parties, go caroling, or even just meet up with family for festive celebrations. But that doesn’t mean you have to skip every tradition this year that’s where Christmas movies come in.
Holiday movies evoke years gone by, show us that our families might be a little less intense than they could be, and set the mood for a very merry Christmas. They’re even more special now, reminding us that we’ll be able to celebrate like normal one day. You’ll find a movie for every mood on this list, so grab your warmest blanket, pour yourself a cup of tea, and settle in for a Yuletide classic or two.

First, I should admit that I’m a sucker for a lot of holiday standards, from The Grinch and Peanuts to Rudolph and Frosty the Snowman. I adore both
White Christmas and
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, but there’s also a lot of schmaltzy, badly-written nonsense floating around out there like so much stale, crusty fruitcake this time of year…and when the usual holiday fare starts wearing thin, it’s time to mix things up a bit.
The following movies and TV specials are amazing because they find new ways of celebrating the holiday spirit, with all its weird traditions and potentially awkward moments and unmeetable expectations. It’s not about irony or snark or subversion it’s about making your own odd, goofy, wonderful kind of holiday cheer, wherever you can find it…

Big budget releases were moved and the only disaster movie to create a buzz this year was real life but the show must go on for Plaza 9 Theatres.
The Fridley Theatres location, 2500 S. Center Street, will have five films playing on Christmas Day, hoping to capture some magic with holiday movie goers.
Christmas week is often a big one for theatres leading up to a slower season late in the winter. Last year, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” grossed $32 million domestically on Christmas Day alone.
