Middlesex-London sees drop in new daily COVID-19 cases Sunday, but still in triple digits

LONDON, ONT. The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) is reported 126 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, down from Saturday s record high of 161. The region has seen five consecutive days of 100+ new cases. The last time the MLHU reported fewer than 100 cases was on April 5, with 79. The region now has a total of 8,394 cases, with 1,209 active, 6,995 resolved and 190 deaths. There are nine confirmed B.1.1.7 variant cases and 697 have screened positive for a variant of concern. The province confirmed a record high 4,456 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Sunday, surpassing the previous record total on Friday of 4,227 new infections. Late Saturday night, the Thames Valley District School Board announced new cases of the virus were detected at Arthur Ford Public School and Mitchell Hepburn Public School.

Widespread COVID-19 exposure forces Ashley Oaks Public School to remote learning

LONDON, ONT. The Thames Valley District School Board is temporarily closing Ashley Oaks Public School and moving all classes to remote learning because of widespread exposure to COVID-19. A large number of staff and students are now required to quarantine effective immediately. Students will move from in-person to remote learning starting Thursday until the end of the spring break on April 19. Teachers will be reaching out to families with information regarding remote learning. All other programs before and after school, as well as spring break activities, are also cancelled. This comes on the same day the board issued a news release stating schools are safe and will remain open for in-person learning during the provincial four-week stay-at-home order that begins Thursday.

Despite 30 area schools with active COVID-19 cases, officials say schools remain safe

LONDON, ONT. School and health officials say classrooms remain safe, even with active COVID-19 cases in 30 London-area schools. According to the Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) website, there are currently 26 schools in the region with at least one or more active COVID-19 cases, but only a small fraction have led to outbreaks. Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) Medical Officer of Health Dr. Chris Mackie says the region has not really seen much spread in schools. The vast majority of cases diagnosed in school were acquired at home. We ve seen very little transmission within schools, really only a handful of cases among the tens of thousands of students that have been in school for the last two months, so schools are not a place of high transmission in this area.
