Take flight at Jack Polson Field with the Burlington Model Aviation Club

Take flight at Jack Polson Field with the Burlington Model Aviation Club Southeast Iowans can find their inner pilot with the Burlington Model Airplane Club at Jack Polson Field. For more than 70 years, aviation enthusiasts have been piloting model aircraft such as helicopters, planes and, more recently, drones from the runway of Jack Polson Field, which is located within the boundaries of Big Hollow Recreation Area in Sperry. It s a hobbyist club, enthusiastic about helicopters, airplanes (and) drones, explained Ted Francis, treasurer of the model airplane club. Flying is a wide-ranging hobby and it is not unheard of to see retired Army personnel, members of Congress and children interested in flying model aircraft. Indeed, the American Model Aeronautics Association provides scholarships for students interested in aeronautical engineering.

Chris Lee is executive director of Des Moines County Conservation

By Chris Lee Executive Director of Des Moines County Conservation Recently there’s been some hubbub about the city of Burlington purchasing a shy five acres of land from the school district for a retention pond over by the old James Madison school. As I understand it, the pond is a part of the stormwater project the city will be working on this year, but the purchase had to be fast-tracked due to, of all things, bats. Yes, bats. Those winged creatures of the night that haunt children’s dreams and which are a staple of Halloween decorations the world over.

Naturalist invites Iowans to prowl for barred owls on winter hikes

The Hawk Eye With nesting season about to start for barred owls, Des Moines County Conservation is offering a look at these interesting birds and their mating habits. People are invited to meet with Marcus Nack, a naturalist who joined DMC Conservation in spring 2020, and then hike conservation trails, call for mate-seeking owls and follow their voices when they answer.  There are three Night Hike and Owl Prowl events this year to allow for social distancing. The owl prowls tend to be very popular and the first hike scheduled for Feb. 11 is filled. Not to worry  registration will start Monday for a 7 p.m. Feb. 18 Owl Prowl at Starr s Cave Nature Center, and Monday, Feb. 15 for the 7 p.m. Feb. 25 Owl Prowl at Big Hollow Recreation Area. They will start with a short program about owls and their distinctive noises.
