CNA file photo Taipei, May 10 (CNA) The Taipei District Court on Monday sentenced two former legislative aides to jail time for their involvement in developing a spy network in Taiwan on China s behalf. The case involved Chen Wei-jen (陳惟仁), Lin Yung-ta (林雍達) and Lee Yi-hsien (李易諴), although the latter died of cancer last September and therefore was excluded from the court s ruling Monday. The court said the case can still be appealed. They were indicted by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office in August 2020 for allegedly developing spying activities and organizing espionage networks in Taiwan for Chinese agencies, in violation of the National Security Act.

CNA file photo Taipei, April 27 (CNA) The Taipei District Court on Tuesday rejected a request by Taiwan s top envoy to Japan Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) for compensation of NT$1 million (US$35,832) from Taipei City Councilor Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強). The demand for monetary compensation resulted from criticism of Hsieh s alleged dodging of responsibility for Taiwan s handling of stranded Taiwanese tourists in Japan in 2018 due to a typhoon that caused a Taiwanese diplomat stationed in Osaka to commit suicide.

CNA file photo Taipei, Jan. 15 (CNA) Kuomintang (KMT) lawmaker Liao Kuo-tung (廖國棟), who has been detained for five months for his alleged involvement in a bribery scandal, was released Friday after paying NT$10 million (US$357,070) in bail. Liao remains subject to residence restrictions and is barred from leaving the country. According to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office, Liao was indicted for alleged violations of the Anti-Corruption Act in September last year in a case related to ownership of the Pacific SOGO Department store chain. The lawmaker is believed to have accepted NT$7.9 million in bribes from former Pacific Distribution Investment Co. Chairman Lee Heng-lung (李恆隆) to illegally help in his legal battle against the Far Eastern Group over ownership of the department store chain.
