Startups provided employment to 26,327 people in Tamil Nadu in the last three years, Union minister of state for commerce and industry Som Prakash said.
In response to MDMK leader Vaiko’s query on the volume of employment generated by startups and the support they received from Centre, Prakash told Rajya Sabha on July 23 that as many 2,408 startups in Tamil Nadu have been recognised by the Startup India Initiative of the department of promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT) in the last three years.
“As on July 7 2021, employment of 26,327 persons has been reported by DPIIT recognized startups in Tamil Nadu in the last three years,” he said.

As many as 50,000 startups have been recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to date, an official statement said on Thursday.
A total of 743 startups were recognised in 2016-2017, in the first year of the initiative, which has now increased exponentially to over 16,000 startups being recognised in the year 2020-2021
