New COVID-19 strain found in HK
December 23, 2020
Centre for Health Protection Communicable Disease Branch Head Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan:
It’s not that we have found any cases (with patients) who have longer incubation periods or are more infectious. It’s just for precaution s sake because these two are the first two cases we found in Hong Kong that have the new gene variant - according to reports from the United Kingdom, it may be more infectious.
A small proportion of COVID-19 (patients) may have a very long incubation period of more than 14 days. That’s why we are implementing the 21-day rule for those coming back from the UK, just to make sure (that the new virus strain) won’t spread to the community. (For) these travel collaterals, they came back on December 7. They should be tested on the 19th day and stay at home until they test negative. But we just want to make sure (that) they get tested and observe their symptoms - if they have any - to catch (the virus) early.
