“The people disobeying need to understand we’re talking about lives here,” Tsannie said.
Hatchet Lake Dene Nation, located more than 800 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, has become the unlikely epicentre of COVID-19 in a province that has recently dropped its last public health restrictions.
The Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) said 151 cases of COVID-19 had been linked to the outbreak in the community of roughly 1,200 residents. Tsannie said 128 cases were active as of Tuesday afternoon.
At a news conference Monday for the signing of a new health memorandum of understanding for Lloydminster, Minister of Rural and Remote Health Everett Hindley was asked about the provincial response to the situation at Hatchet Lake. Hindley said they are “watching the situation at Hatchet Lake very closely” and noted there was a briefing that morning with Minister of Health Paul Merriman and their officials. He said they were working closely with people on the ground in Hatchet Lake in terms of what they require for support. He also said officials are focusing on immunization and ensuring vaccines are available to rural and remote areas of the province, including the North.
This is the renewal of an MOU first signed in 2014 to collaborate on an integrated approach on delivering services in Lloydminster, including shared planning and enhanced accountability. The two provinces also committed to share information and resolve issues, and explore joint opportunities. “Today along with Minister Shandro, I am proud to find a new memorandum of understanding for the provision of health services in the Lloydminster area,” said Hindley, appearing from Regina. The previous MOU expired in July 2019. According to the province’s news release, under the renewed MOU both Alberta and Saskatchewan agreed to collaborate in planning and funding of health services delivered within a 150-kilometre radius of the city of Lloydminster.
