Phoenix International Holdings, Inc. (Phoenix), under the direction of the U.S. Navy’s Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV), located and recovered the fuselage of a downed MH-60S Seahawk helicopter in the Pacific, near Okinawa, Japan, from a record breaking depth of 19,075 feet.
This equates to just over 3.6 miles beneath the sea and is 266 feet deeper than the previous salvage record, also set by Phoenix and SUPSALV during an operation in 2019. The helicopter was located in March of 2020 using the U.S. Navy’s Autonomous Underwater Vehicle “Trondheim” and then, a year later, Phoenix and SUPSALV returned to the site and recovered the helicopter on March 21st, 2021 using the U.S. Navy’s Remotely Operated Vehicle “CURV 21” and Fly Away Deep Ocean Salvage System.

The INSPECTOR 125 USV has a low magnetic and acoustic signature to prevent mine triggering, and its unsinkability keeps it afloat in the event of mine explosions. He is designed to integrate different payloads depending on the mission to be performed. Changing from one configuration to another takes less than 6 hours. The drone will be able to accommodate either the AUV and its LARS in taxi mode , or the towed sonar, or MIDS (Mine Identification and Disposal system), or divers and protection units.

The RRS James Clark Ross (JCR) made her final call to her homeport of the Falkland Islands on Monday March first, since after thirty years of service, the JCR will be sold at the end of her 20/21 Antarctic season.
The Falkland Islands are the final stop on the ship’s five and a half month mission to deliver scientific and operational staff to Antarctica, and to resupply the UK stations in Antarctica for another year.

The Sheriff’s Office Dive Rescue Team responds to all water related emergencies within Douglas County. The team is often called upon to assist with search and recovery operations in other counties in west central Minnesota as well.
In many of these calls, the exact location of the drowning victim or evidence item is unknown and team members must conduct detailed searches. In January, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office purchased a Deep Trekker DTG 3 underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). Our Dive Rescue Team will use this underwater vehicle to help with search operations for drowning victims and evidence.
