How IITs are helping people get clean drinking water across the country

New Delhi, March 11 : Some leading Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are taking the initiative to provide clean water with the help of science and innovation in places where clean drinking water was not available easily.
This effort has been made with the encouragement and vision of the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.
In fact, the Centre for Technical Excellence at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur is focusing on water purification these days. The Centre has also worked towards providing a supply of safe drinking water in several states of the country.

Pugalendhi of the Madras High Court on Wednesday expressed strong displeasure to the Centre and Anna University over repeated problems created in following the reservation policy for admissions to the M.Tech (Biotechnology) and M.Tech (Computational Biology) courses offered by the university but sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology.

“With estimates indicating that the water availability for agriculture likely to be reduced to 70% from 83% by 2050, the availability of good quality and adequate quantity of water for farming would be crucial for continued food and nutritional security of the country,” secretary of Union Ministry of Science and Technology Ashutosh Sharma has said.
Delivering his address via video link at the 33rd annual convocation of University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad (UAS-D) on Saturday, Mr. Sharma said that recycling of waste water, including domestic and industrial effluents in farming, would substantially increase the reuse of waste water.
