Time to Take On the Increasing Air Pollution in Indian Cities Formaldehyde found in the air over Kanpur, Delhi
The World Air Quality Report released on March 17 places New Delhi as the world’s most polluted capital for the third year in a row. 14 of the 15 most polluted cities in the world are in India, while China, Pakistan and Bangladesh have only two each.
This is not the first study on rising air pollution in Indian cities. Every year one or the other international organisation releases a report on the hazardous air here, but instead of making efforts to reduce the pollution, an even more urgent concern given the pandemic, the Indian and state governments avoid it every time by making excuses.

JAMMU, May 5: In a major development, the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has recommended grant of Environmental Clearance to 1320 Mega Watt (MW) 2-Stage Kirthai Hydro Electric Project in Padder Tehsil of Kishtwar district with the direction to the Project Proponent (PP) Jammu and Kashmir Power Development Corporation to ensure strict compliance to the conditions imposed by the panel.
Official sources told EXCELSIOR that the proposals for grant of Environmental Clearance to 390 Mega Watt Stage-I Kirthai Hydro Electric Project and 930 Mega Watt Stage-II Kirthai Hydro Electric Project were earlier considered in the 16th meeting of the Expert Appraisal Committee held on July 27, 2018.

It has been almost three years since the police opened fire on a crowd of men, women and children who gathered with this slogan on their lips in Thoothukudi. On May 22, 2018 the state unleashed extreme violence on a crowd protesting against the Sterlite copper plant of the Vedanta group for the severe pollution it was causing, endangering the lives of local residents.
The police firing killed 13 civilians and injured many others. Some of those killed were part of the protest, others were caught in the crossfire.
Samples being sent to lab for analysis
Animal deaths in Bandipur, Nagarahole and other protected areas are being monitored and the viscera analysed in laboratory to rule out the possibility of COVID-19 outbreak in the animal world.
Reports of lions testing positive for COVID-19 apart from a few deaths reported in different parts of the world has led the government to issue guidelines in management of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries during the pandemic time.
Mahesh Kumar, Director, Nagarahole Tiger Reserve, said based on the advisory the Forest Department was also monitoring the death of animals inside national parks and sending samples for laboratory analysis.
