Cases of bird flu have been confirmed in 13 states so far of which of which Avian Influenza has been reported in poultry birds from nine states whilein wild birds from 12 states, the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying confirmed on Saturday. As on January 23, outbreaks of Avian Influenza (Bird flu) have been confirmed in nine states (Kerala, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab) for poultry birds and in 12 States (Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab) for crow/migratory/wild birds, said the ministry in a statement.

Maharashtra issues directives for seamless movement, marketing of poultry products

Maharashtra’s Animal Husbandry Commissioner has been asked by the Secretary of Animal Husbandry Department of the State to write to all the district collectors for maintaining a free movement and hassle-free selling of poultry products in the State.
Since the outbreak of bird flu on January 8 in Maharashtra, 5,987 birds including wild birds, carrion birds and even parrots and common crow have died. Of the total number of birds that died due to infection, 745 are poultry birds.
Maharashtra’s Principal Secretary of Animal Husbandry Department, Anoop Kumar, citing his earlier communication with an official of the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, has asked Animal Husbandry Commissioner Sachindra Pratap Singh to ensure that there is a seamless marketing of poultry products from non-infected zones in the State.
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Saturday said bird flu in poultry has been confirmed in nine districts of Maharashtra, while culling operation in poultry is underway in one district each in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
Apart from poultry, the viral disease has been confirmed in crows in Uttarakhand, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh and in pigeons, brown fish owls and Herons in Delhi.
However, the central government requested state governments to rethink their decisions to impose ban sale of poultry products and allow sale of poultry items sourced from the non-infected areas/states.
In India, bird flu or avian influenza is spread mainly by migratory birds coming into India during the winter months from between September and March. The disease is zoonotic.
