VANCOUVER The president of the Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs is calling on the provincial government to declare a state of emergency due to the raging wildfires threatening communities. Grand Chief Stewart Phillip says First Nations are not receiving the proper resources they need. They’re getting a lot of grandiose statements of solidarity from the prime minister and the premier, but that s no replacement for firetrucks and fire equipment, Phillip said There are currently five First Nations or Indian Bands who are under evacuation alerts or orders. “In many ways they’re ill-equipped, under-resourced and lack the capacity to safeguard their own communities from these raging wildfires,” Phillip said.
More Than 160 Unmarked Graves Found Near Indigenous Canadian School

The western Canadian Penelakut Tribe says it has found more than 160 unmarked graves near the site of a former indigenous boarding school, Canada s fourth discovery of this kind in recent weeks.
In the last month, discoveries of more than 1,000 graves prompted a nationwide reckoning over Canada s painful past and its policies of forced assimilation toward indigenous communities. We are at another point in time where we must face the trauma because of these acts of genocide, said Penelakut Tribe Chief Joan Brown in a July 8 statement confirming 160+ undocumented and unmarked graves newly-uncovered on the British Columbia reservation.
