At a routine briefing on steps taken by the government to battle the COVID-19 crisis, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Piyush Goyal told reporters that multiple efforts were being undertaken to enhance production and quickly transport oxygen to the hospitals and patients.

Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are the worst-affected states that contributed to this massive surge in April. A record number of 4,08,323 lakh new cases were reported in the past 24 hours. With this, India’s COVID-19 official tally has risen from 1,21,49,335 to 1,91,63,488 at the end of April 2021. Earlier, it had taken more than six months since September 22, 2020 for the caseload to increase by over 66 lakh. The health ministry said since April, there has been a steep rise in the number of cases.
