Haryana to purchase DRDO s anti-COVID drug for treating coronavirus patients
Haryana will purchase anti-COVID drug 2DG developed by DRDO for treatment of coronavirus patients, state Health Minister Anil Vij said. He said the drug helps in the faster recovery of patients and reduces supplemental oxygen dependence. The state has seen a surge in COVID-19 cases in the second wave of the pandemic. New Delhi: The first batch of anti-COVID oral drug 2-DG, developed by the DRDO, was released on Monday by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) approved the 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) drug for emergency use as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severe coronavirus patients earlier this month.
In his brief remarks, Singh said the drug has brought a new ray of hope for the treatment of COVID-19 patients. This is a great example of the scientific prowess of our country, he said.
At the same time, the defence minister said that it is not the time to relax and get tired as there is nothing definitive about the course of the pandemic.

The first batch of Anti-COVID drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was launched by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on May 17.
Rajnath Singh tweeted: “Handed over the first batch of 2-DG anti Covid drug to the Union Health Minister @drharshvardhan after it was released today. This 2-DG drug developed by @DRDO India & DRL is a perfect example of India’s scientific prowess and a milestone in the efforts towards self-reliance. The medicine will play a crucial role in winning the fight against COVID-19. The development and production of the drug is a shining example of public-private sector partnership to help the nation in these challenging times”.
