NEW DELHI: COVID-19 vaccines will work against new variants of the virus and there is no evidence that current vaccines will fail to protect against the SARS-CoV-2 mutants reported from the UK or South Africa, the government said on Tuesday.

New Delhi: Five per cent of the coronavirus positive samples in the country would be subjected to genome sequencing, the government has said. There is nothing popular or unpopular about virus strains. All the inbound passengers from the UK were identified the passenger manifest or lists were shared with the states and UTs. They were advised to take samples. Most of them who came from December 21 to the midnight of December 23 were subjected to RT- PCR test at the airport itself, said Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan while responding to a question if the mutant strain of COVID-19 detected from six people is the most popular one, called B117 .

70% of total COVID deaths reported in men; 45% fatalities in those below 60 yrs: Health ministry
Addressing a press conference, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said 63 per cent of the total cases were reported in males and 37 per cent cases in females.

About 45 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths in the country have been reported in those below 60 years of age while 70 per cent of total fatalities from the infection were registered in men, the Health ministry said on Tuesday.
