SPOKANE, Wash.– It’s really not easy to avoid COVID-19 outbreaks, even if you have all the right protocols in place.
That’s what the Union Gospel Mission Men’s Shelter has realized, as more than 70 people have been infected by the virus.
UGM thought it was doing everything right, but as we’ve seen so often throughout this pandemic, an asymptomatic case likely brought the virus into the shelter.
“Honestly, we, throughout the entire shelter system, were surprised we went so long without having any outbreaks,” UGM Director of Ministries Joel Brown said.
In a matter of just one month, the virus infected more than 70 people.

The shelter has been shut down since Thursday, Feb. 4 due to a COVID-19 outbreak. UGM Director of Marketing and Communications Barbara Comito said the shelter experienced an outbreak of COVID-19 cases with more than 70 people testing positive since Christmas.
In a press release Friday, Comito said the men s shelter only had one positive case this week with no positive tests among its staff and clients. On Feb. 4, five shelter staff were out due to COVID-19, including the shelter manager and director of ministries.

n some ways, it was surprising that Spokane s homeless shelters weren t hit with COVID-19 outbreaks sooner. We were expecting that congregate settings and shelters would be one of the first impacted by COVID because of the amount of people in one space not necessarily having their own space to isolate, says Kylie Kingsbury, homeless outreach coordinator for the Spokane Regional Health District. But shelters were largely able to stave off any outbreaks until November and December, when spread of the virus spiked throughout all sectors of the community with Halloween and then later holiday gatherings contributing to the problem.
