NYC Restaurant Week Returns As A To-Go Event for the Winter

Nick Solares/Eater After the annual summer tradition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, NYC Restaurant Week’s winter iteration is moving forward, albeit in a to-go only format for the first time. The New York Postfirst reported on the development, an effort undertaken by the city to help boost NYC’s battered restaurant economy. Restaurant Week will take place from January 25 to 31 with the option of extending it an additional week to February 7. So far, 150 restaurants citywide have signed up for the annual event, which will see establishments offer an entrée along with a side for lunch or dinner for $20.21. Participating restaurants include Harlem’s soul food icon Sylvia’s, dim sum spot RedFarm, Upper West Side’s Bar Boulud, and Union Square Hospitality Group’s Gramercy Tavern and Union Square Cafe.

Specialty Food Industry Loses Notable Figures

Author: The specialty food industry lost a number of industry trailblazers during the past year. Joe Coulombe, founder of Trader Joe’s, passed away at the age of 89. Coulombe opened the first Trader Joe’s location in 1967 in Pasadena, California, going against industry norms at the time to introduce Trader Joe’s private label products in 1972. He retired from the company in 1988. Dorothy Agnes Tracy, co-founder and namesake of Dot Foods, passed away at the age of 91, earlier this year. Dorothy and her husband Robert Tracy founded the company in 1960 and she played an integral part in the company’s early success by helping with bookkeeping, secretarial, and delivery duties.
