With the counting of votes underway, the Election Commission Sunday said it has taken a stern view of reports of the congregation of people to celebrate anticipated victory and has asked the chief secretaries concerned to file an FIR in each case and suspend the police station in charge where such gatherings happen.
Responding to queries about reports of celebratory gatherings by supporters of political parties, an Election Commission spokesperson said the poll panel has taken a serious note of some reports of congregations of people to celebrate anticipated victory.
Dubai: Several Indian expats from the states where assembly elections were held last month spent time glued on to news about the election results that were released as live updates on Sunday.

The Election Commission of India has written to Chief Secretaries of all States/UTs where counting is underway to prohibit victory celebrations urgently . The commission has directed that responsible SHOs and other officers must be suspended immediately and criminal and disciplinary actions must be initiated against them.
The ECI s direction came after it was brought to the attention of the commission through media that at certain locations in some states, public celebrations in context to today s counting are being carried out which is in contravention of the directions issued by the Election Commission vide letter dates April 21 and May 1.

New Delhi: In view of a surge in COVID-19 infections, the Election Commission (EC) on Sunday wrote to Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories and heads of political parties to prohibit the victory celebrations where the counting of votes is underway and demanded strict compliance of directions.
In a letter to Chief Secretaries, the poll body asked to urgently prohibit the public celebrations being carried out in the context of today s counting of votes.
