Powerful thunderstorms may trigger floods in NY, NJ By FOX 5 NY Staff Published  Audrey Puente says powerful thunderstorms could cause flash flooding. NEW YORK - A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for several counties in the New York area and a Flash Flood Watch is in effect for the larger region as fast-moving storms could dump more than 3 inches of rain in some areas in a short amount of time. The watch is in effect until 10 a.m. on Tuesday for all of northeast New Jersey, most of southeast New York, and a small portion of southern Connecticut.  A nearly stationary frontal boundary combined with a hot and humid air mass will cause one or more rounds of thunderstorms with heavy rain to affect the area into Monday night, according to the National Weather Service. Rainfall amounts could be highly variable, but a general 1 to 3 inches of rain with locally higher amounts is possible through Monday night.
