New Delhi: In the wake of farmers’ tractor rally turning violent, the Centre decided Tuesday to deploy additional paramilitary troops in Delhi. The increase in paramilitary troops is being done to restore peace and maintain law and order, officials of the Home Ministry said. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. It was attended by Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla and Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava among others.
Additional paramilitary troops will be brought in for deployment in sensitive places in Delhi, a home ministry official said. The exact number of additional troops was not known immediately. However, officials suggested that it could be around 1,500 to 2,000 personnel (about 15 to 20 companies). Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Tuesday briefed Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation in Delhi where the farmers tractor rally against the agri laws turned violent, officials said. The meeting came after a large number of farmers with their tractors broke police barricades and entered central Delhi areas, including Red Fort and ITO. The home secretary met the home minister and apprised him about the prevailing situation in the national capital and the steps being taken by the Delhi Police to maintain peace, an official said. A few other officials were also present at the meeting. The Union Home Ministry has already ordered a temporary suspension of the internet in parts of Delhi.

New Delhi: Protesting farmers, who took out tractor rally in Delhi, violated conditions agreed for the rally and went off the designated routes and laid siege to the Red Fort and climbed the flagpole on Republic Day on Tuesday. Later, the Delhi Police removed protesting farmers from the iconic monument. A protesting farmer died at ITO after his tractor overturned during the tractor parade. The police had given permission to the Kisans protesting against the three new farm laws to hold their tractor parade on selected routes only after the official Republic Day parade on the Rajpath concludes.
