Labour Department enforcement personnel conducting checks on foreign workers’ living quarters in Kuala Lumpur. – AMIRUL SYAFIQ MOHD DIN/THESUN KUALA LUMPUR: Checks by the Labour Department and other government agencies on hostels for foreign workers found more than 300 of them living in cramped and damp conditions. The checks were conducted on living quarters provided by two employers, a nasi kandar shop and a supermarket, all employing foreign workers. Officers conducting checks at the workplaces directed the workers to take them to their hostels to check their living conditions. Journalists who surveyed the hostels were surprised to see the cramped conditions.

Two rubber glove company workers quarters found to be overcrowded, not certified

LUMUT (Jan 15): Almost 1,000 workers of a rubber glove company were today found staying in overcrowded quarters at two locations here and the facilities also did not have accommodation certificates from the Peninsula Malaysia Labour Department (JTK). Peninsula Malaysia JTK, Legal and Enforcement Division director Zaini Yaakob said the conditions clearly flouted the provision under the Workers Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446). Indeed, our inspection showed overcrowding whereby a bedroom which should only have two occupants was shared by more than four workers, he said after conducting inspectiona at both the workers quarters here today. Zaini said all the six blocks at the two workers quarters were found to be clean.

MELAKA: About 95% of employers in the state have yet to apply for a certificate of accommodation from the Manpower Department (JTK) to provide housing for their foreign workers. Melaka JTK director Rosli Jantan said so far only 82 employers had submitted their applications and 11 applications had been approved. He said this to reporters after conducting an integrated operation with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Melaka Historic City Council, and the police at an ice manufacturing factory in Bukit Gedong here today. On the operation, Rosli said the factory was found to have committed four offences under the Workers’ Minimum Standards of Housing and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).
