Coal-Fired Power Station Provides Natural Ecological Environment for Fireflies and Birds
In the 1980s, Taiwan’s economy grew rapidly and its demand for electricity surged. New power plants were urgently needed. In order to reduce transportation costs of imported coal and to promote economic development in central Taiwan, a coal-fired power plant was constructed in Taichung. With state-of-the-art emissions reduction equipment, the site not only provides needed electricity, but has also proven to be a haven for fireflies, terns, and many other birds.
TSMC files record number of patents for inventions

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (台積電) in the first three months of this year filed the most invention patent applications it has ever filed in a quarter, retaining its place as the nation’s top patent applicant, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said last week.
In the first quarter, the world’s largest contract chipmaker filed 678 invention patents, up 426 percent quarter-on-quarter and the most among Taiwanese and foreign applicants for an eighth straight quarter, Intellectual Property Office data showed.
Among foreign applicants, US-based chip designer Qualcomm Inc placed first with 215 invention patent applications, up 46 percent from the previous quarter, the data showed.
Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest contract chipmaker, filed its highest quarterly number of invention patent applications in the first three months of the year, retaining its place as the country's top patent applicant, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).
