Manufacturing index leading growth in February KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) grew 1.5% in February 2021 compared with a year ago underpinned by growth in the manufacturing index. The IPI consists of three main sectors, which are mining, manufacturing and electricity. “The IPI grew 1.5% in February compared with the same month of the previous year. The growth of IPI in February was driven by the manufacturing index with an increase of 4.5%, ” said chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. (pic below) February’s expansion undershot the 2% growth forecast by 11 economists in a Reuters poll, but was faster than the 1.2% rise recorded in January.

Published on: Saturday, April 10, 2021 By: Bernama Text Size: Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) growth in the first two months of the year shows that the external environment has been constructive for the domestic economy.  The IPI, which is a monthly economic indicator measuring real output in the manufacturing, mining, electricity, and gas industries, rose 1.5 per cent year-on-year in February 2021, propelled by a 4.5 per cent rise in the manufacturing index. Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid  (pic) said the higher exports volume in February, which grew 17.6 per cent, had also translated into a continued positive print in IPI growth.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said conversely, the mining and electricity index dropped 6.0 per cent and 5.8 per cent, respectively. On the manufacturing sector, he said the output rose by 4.5 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) in February 2021. “The major sub-sectors contributing to the growth in the manufacturing sector in February 2021 were electrical and electronics products (10.3 per cent), petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (8.9 per cent) as well as transport equipment and other manufactures (3.2 per cent),” he said in a statement today.

On the manufacturing sector, he said output rose by 4.5% y-o-y in February 2021. “The major sub-sectors contributing to the growth in the manufacturing sector in February 2021 were electrical and electronics products (10.3%), petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (8.9%) as well as transport equipment and other manufactures (3.2%),” he said in a statement today. He said the export-oriented industries drove the manufacturing sector’s growth by 5.8%, while domestic-oriented industries increased by 1.8%.
