Thulasidharan, president of the Federation, said at its annual meeting held virtually on Sunday that this will be one of the demands that it will pursue with the government. Further, the Central government should establish a Cotton Board of India, similar to Coffee Board and Jute Board. It should also have a time-bound plan to implement the mini missions of the second phase of Technology Mission on Cotton (TMC). Mr. Thulasidharan also pointed out the need for free flow of finance to the cotton and textile sector. He said that all financial controls should be eased to encourage investment and the government should immediately address the challenges that entrepreneurs face to get finance. Coloured cotton developed by SIMA CDRA in Coimbatore.   The Southern India Mills Association - Cotton Development and Research Association (SIMA-CDRA) has ventured into development and multiplication of coloured cotton seeds and is promoting cultivation of Extra Long Staple (ELS) cotton. R. Ravichandran, Director of Veejay Yarns and Fabrics, who is the newly-elected chairman of SIMA-CDRA, said the Central Government is looking at increasing production of high quality ELS cotton, organic cotton and naturally coloured cotton under the AtmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan Scheme. The research team of the association is also gearing up to develop various cotton seeds to mitigate the challenges of Bt cotton, herbicide, water scarcity, etc.

The newly-elected Chairman of the association R Ravichandran said that successful completion of ELS cotton trials in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu has given hope for expansion into other areas. “We have identified farmers and necessary area for multiplying the pure organic cotton under contract farming in the coming season. Few leading mills have already indicated interest to venture into this project in the pilot phase,” he said, highlighting the launch of Indian cotton brand “Kasthuri” and development of Shakthi BT and SIMA Platinum by SIMA CD &RA. “The latter two have recently been certified and ready for commercial multiplication”, he added
