Building momentum on the high road to Glasgow

Building momentum on the high road to Glasgow There is no straight line to net zero emissions. We need an adjustable plan that buys time with technology we already have, and can speed up if required. Share Australia is not on track to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions anywhere near 2050, and we do not currently have policies to get us there. Yet there are practical actions that governments could lead with, and industries could take, to build momentum towards the widely agreed target. Australia has committed to delivering a long-term emissions reduction strategy to the international climate conference in Glasgow in November. The federal government and opposition and all states and territories have agreed on a long-term net zero target (although, for the federal government, a 2050 target year remains only a preference). These governments, as with most industry, have yet to implement policies to meet such a target.

Preparing for a global renewable energy economy

POLICY FORUM 8 July 2021 Nursing an ageing coal-powered energy engine-room and likely to face rapid falls in the price of coal exports, Australia needs a plan for energy transition, Fiona J Beck and Kylie Catchpole write. Last month, the G7 leaders released a joint statement committing to net-zero emissions by 2050, and an “end to direct government support for unabated international thermal coal power generation by 2021.” ‘Abated’ power generation refers to when emissions are offset by carbon capture and utilisation or storage (CCUS). So far, CCUS for coal power generation has seen very little commercial success, despite substantial global investment, meaning this statement applies to the vast majority of coal power generation.
