7 Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) personnel participated in various Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) events in April to increase awareness of sexual assault prevention and resources for victims.
Although SAAPM occurs annually in April, the Department of Defense (DoD) has a zero tolerance policy for sexual assault, prevention is an all-hands mission every day.
SMWDC hosted many SAAPM events to raise awareness. Those activities included the “No-more” campaign, base clean-up, denim day, and culminated with a SAAPM proclamation event held at SMWDC headquarters April 28th.
The “No-more” campaign is dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault by increasing awareness, inspiring action and fueling culture change. Individuals wrote short messages that were displayed throughout the command, targeting behaviors and actions that we say “no-more” to because they do not meet the high standards of naval

FORT WORTH, Texas (Apr. 22, 2021) – A Full-Time Support staff member assigned at Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) New Orleans was recently selected as the sole recipient of the 2021 Exceptional Military Victim Advocate Award for outstanding contributions supporting service members and dependents.
Hospital Corpsman First Class Patrick Kilcline, from Kokomo, Indiana, received the news of his selection by the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA) Board of Directors and staff in a congratulatory letter earlier this month.
“I was surprised,” said Kilcline. “I really didn’t expect it. To be honest, I’d say I was just doing my job. I don’t think I’ve done anything extraordinary besides just staying current and competent.”
5 April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, and as part of this month of awareness April 28, 2021, is Denim Day. This year marks the 22nd year of Denim Day, internationally.
A day for denim? You might be wondering why denim of all things is supposed to help support the awareness and prevention of sexual assault. It all started in Italy, when a rape case was brought to court in the early 1990s. In this case, a young woman was assaulted and in the events of the attack her jeans were removed. In 1992, the perpetrator was convicted of rape and sentenced to jail.
