GARDINER On Saturday the Wellness Connection of Maine, which has been a medical marijuana dispensary and has advocated strongly for medical marijuana, is shifting to an adult-use marijuana retail store at its Gardiner location.

Four months since lawful sales of recreational-use marijuana began in Maine, the industry is blossoming and some of the newest sprouts are rooted outside the state.
Maine legalized cannabis for medical uses in 1999, and then authorized its recreational use by adults in 2016. But plans for a legitimate, open marketplace in marijuana stalled for several years until going live in October 2020.
Starting last summer, there was a land-rush grab for licenses needed by cannabis-related businesses to operate, and once they did, sales of marijuana soared. Recreational purchases of pot products in Maine total $6.75 million to date, according to the most recent data from the state Office of Marijuana Policy. January sales were double the level in November.
Gardiner gives initial approval to cannabis testing lab
The Massachusetts-based MCR Labs must also secure state approvals from the Office of Marijuana Policy and the Center for Disease Control as well as a business license from the Gardiner City Council.

GARDINER A marijuana testing lab based in Massachusetts is making plans to expand into central Maine.
On Wednesday, an approval by the Gardiner Planning Board paved the way for MCR Labs to open a facility in the Libby Hill Business Park.
If the company is able to secure all required approvals, it would be the first testing lab operating in central Maine with an opening date targeted for late spring.
