ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - The Albany Police Department has hired more than 30 officers last year. Of those 30, only about half stayed.
Albany Police Chief Michael Persley said there are many different reasons for officers leaving.
Persley said part of the reason law enforcement around the world is having issues keeping officers is because of what he calls a âsocial revolution.â
He said this social revolution affects officers applying as well as keeping officers around.
Jail employees fired after being arrested in inmate contraband case
ALBANY, Georgia (Albany Herald) Two Dougherty County Jail employees have been fired after their arrests on charges related to providing contraband to inmates, and the investigation could lead to additional arrests.
Detention officers Lisa Grant and Lamar Snells violated Georgia law prohibiting providing or conspiring to pass prohibited items to inmates, according to a news release provided Thursday by the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Col. Jon Ostrander, who oversees jail operations, said he could not provide details about what kind of contraband materials are involved in the case.

LEESBURG, Ga. (WALB) - Law enforcement across Lee County is asking you to get rid of your unneeded prescription drugs the proper way.
If you’re looking to get rid of unwanted drugs with no questions asked, there’s at least one place in Lee County you can do that and it’s at Leesburg City Hall and the Leesburg Police Department.
You can walk in Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and just drop off the drugs that you don’t need or want. And this weekend, the officers on duty will gladly take them off your hands.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Law enforcement in Dougherty County is asking young people in the area to join them.
The Albany Dougherty Youth Unit wants to launch a cadet academy and train kids to be future police officers.
The proposed academy is one of a number of plans that the Albany Dougherty Youth Unit has in the process. They hope to attract kids with an interest in law enforcement.

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - On Wednesday, most of the Dougherty County Judicial Building will open back up for staff to head back to work.
County officials said the first-floor lobby and the third floor will remain closed.
Officials said the following about the reopening:
Everyone will enter the building through the east entrance on the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office side of the building.
Staff in the District Attorney’s Office, Municipal Court and Probate Court, can return to work.
