The two winter storms that came through the state in February made roads impassable for days and sent water systems offline due to the freezing temperatures. In Jackson, systems at the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant were affected for days and warmer temperatures after the freeze caused more than 100 water main breaks and other leaks.
The outage affected all 43,000 water connections on the system, which includes residents in Byram, forcing residents to find bottled and nonpotable water to drink, bathe and flush toilets for weeks.

The state of Mississippi would see billions of dollars for a wide range of infrastructure projects under a recently unveiled plan from the White House.
Under President Joe Biden’s American Jobs Plan, the White House is proposing about $2.3 trillion in infrastructure funding and other improvements across the country.
The upgrade and repair of city, county and state water infrastructure is among the priorities of the plan, according to the White House which says it is committed to investing about $4.8 billion in the state for that purpose over the next 20 years. It also says it will pump another $50 billion to states to protect infrastructure from extreme weather events.

When the storms hit, Land said he was also under a boil water advisory, but his problems resolved after a few days. He said he s never heard of an outage lasting nearly as long as the one in Jackson and felt compelled to help. I saw the news story and figured I needed to do something, he said.
