Photo: Facebook A school committee in Rhode Island is threatening to sue a woman for filing what they said were 160 separate public records requests.  However, the parent argues under state law the filings constitute just one, as they were filed within a 30 day period. Now, the South Kingstown mother of a kindergartner, Nicole Solas, is firing back. The Town of South Kingstown initially demanded a nearly $10,000 bill for records retrieval related to her request for information about the school district’s implementation of  “critical race and gender curriculum.” On Wednesday night, the South Kingstown School Committee will meet, with one of the agenda items listed as “Discussion/Action: filing lawsuit against Solas to challenge filing of over 160 APRA requests.”GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLAST

South County Confronts Long-Standing Coastal Challenges

Multiple Authors Article In 2015 the pavilion at South Kingstown Town Beach had to be moved back 300 feet because of the beating it was taking being so close to the shore. As increasingly frequent and intense storms batter the Ocean State’s weary coast, the consequences, such as eroding beaches, flooded homes, compromised public streets and threatened infrastructure, become more common. While efforts to mitigate these impacts are underway along Rhode Island’s 400-plus miles of coastline, municipalities must balance loss with timing and limited money. Twenty-one major natural disasters between 1938 and 2015, including the “Great New England Hurricane” of 83 years ago, punished this Washington County coastal community, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. URI Board of Trustees names Marc Parlange as next University president

Dooley prepares to say goodbye to southern Rhode Island KINGSTON — The Board of Trustees for the University of Rhode Island has officially named President David M. Dooley’s replacement, though he’ll still sit at the helm for another few months.  Last week, the board announced the selection of Professor Marc B. Parlange, provost and senior vice president of Monash University in Australia, as the university’s next president. In August, he’ll be taking the reins from Dooley — who for more than a decade has been a major driving force of development and transformation in Kingston.  “I just want to say, on a personal note, I’ve really enjoyed living here amongst all of you,” Dooley told members of the South Kingstown Town Council on Monday. “The Town of South Kingstown has been a great place for us, as a family. Lynn and I have enjoyed a lot of what South County, and particularly South Kingstown, has to offer.”

Tensions running high around S K special election

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In less than two weeks time, community members will have finally answered the question of whether the high school will stay or go, but until then, tensions continue to run high. The community seems bitterly divided over whether to approve the $85 million plan and relocate the South Kingstown High School to Curtis Corner, or reject it and head back to the drawing board at Columbia Street.  Many have already chosen their camps, but for those still on the fence in this debate, both sides make their arguments.  When Superintendent Linda Savastano first proposed the idea of relocating the high school to Curtis Corner a year and a half ago, the new site was meant to lend itself better to 21st Century learning spaces, and give the community more of a high school campus.
