As the weather warms up after a long, cold winter, thoughts of frolicking at a nearby beach begins to warm the hearts of many Michiganders. For youngsters, that often means spending time not just in the sand and surf, but also at a nearby splash pad.
Splash pads can be found in communities or parks around the state as an amenity for water lovers looking for a way to cool off on hot Michigan summer days. Before the refreshing water can flow, though, planners need to make sure they are properly handling the wastewater that drains from the play area.
The North Country Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area has been awarded two new grants to continue its work to stop the spread of invasive species in Northern Michigan.
A grant for $50,000 of Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding, awarded by the U.S. Forest Service, will be held by the Mason-Lake Conservation District.
The USFS Grant, titled Parks as Showplaces for Control and Restoration, will allow NCCISMA to continue the work that they have been doing over the past several years, to remove invasive plants from area public parks and replace them with native species. Parks that have been the subject of previous work by NCCISMA include Lake City Parks, Big Rapids Parks and Mecosta County Parks. At Paris Park, in Mecosta County, interpretive signage has been installed to highlight the work done there by NCCISMA.

The Ludington City Council says they are excited help restaurants while allowing people to reconnect.
“So we’re really hoping not only does it provide that kind of you know mental help for folks to be able to connect again but also it’s going to help our downtown businesses get back up on their feet a little bit quicker,” said Mitchell Foster, Ludington City Manager.
