La Jolla News Nuggets: Fox rescue, Innovation Center, Windansea cleanup, graffiti, more

La Jolla residents have spotted some not so sly foxes in and around their yards recently, with some people taking to social media to post photos and videos of the creatures, both solo and in groups called skulks. The Humane Society rescued the fox, which was taken to the Bahde Wildlife Center in San Diego. She had an abnormal gait, using both hind legs in unison and effectively bunny-hopping, said spokeswoman Nina Thompson. Wildlife veterinarians were worried the animal was suffering from hip dysplasia or neosporosis, but results from lab work and radiographs came back normal. The fox was transferred to the Ramona Wildlife Center for more space in a larger enclosure and additional observation.

San Diego takes over management of Logan Heights maintenance district

SAN DIEGO  The city of San Diego decided not to renew a management contract with a local nonprofit after months of complaints from some Logan Heights property owners about poor service and resistance to public criticism during meetings. The Central Commercial District Revitalization Corp. will no longer manage sidewalk sweeping, trash collection, tree trimming and graffiti removal for the maintenance assessment district that includes Logan Heights, Sherman Heights, Grant Hill and Stockton, officials said. The nonprofit had managed the district for more than 20 years, with an annual budget of more than $200,000. In fiscal 2020 the nonprofit received $259,217 in revenues and spent $252,271. For fiscal 2021-2022, it was projected to receive about $273,500 and to spend $266,106.
