/ An Ohio history organization wants to take back land it’s been leasing to a Newark country club for more than a hundred years. However, the county club isn’t giving it up without a fight. Tuesday morning, the Ohio Supreme Court heard an appeal from the Moundbuilders Country Club asking it to reverse lower court rulings that allowed for the early termination of its lease with the Ohio History Connection. The Ohio History Connection’s lease with the Moundbuilders Country Club is set to expire in 2078. The Ohio History Connection wants the land back early so it can convert the property into a public park and improve access to Octagon Mounds.

Utica man enters not guilty plea to child pornography charges NEWARK - A Utica man has entered not guilty pleas to child pornography charges filed last month. Shane A. Huffman, 40, of Utica, was indicted on one count of endangering children, a second-degree felony; two counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor or impaired person, a second and fourth-degree felony; one count of sexual battery, a third-degree felony; two counts of illegal use of minor or impaired person in nudity-oriented material or performance, both fourth-degree felonies; and two counts of notice of residence address change, both fourth-degree felonies, in Licking County Common Pleas Court at the end of last month.

Refugee-Canyon Fire District files suit against Licking County over dispatching fees

Newark Advocate NEWARK - The Refugee-Canyon Joint Fire District has filed a civil lawsuit against Licking County and its Board of Commissioners over 911 dispatching fees. In a civil complaint filed in Licking County Common Pleas Court last week, the Refugee-Canyon Joint Fire District seeks declaratory judgement in the case, asking the court to declare Licking County doesn t have the legal authority to charge for dispatch services provided to the district. The Refugee-Canyon Joint Fire District was formed in October 2019, following approval by Hebron s council members and Union Township s trustees. A joint venture between the Village of Hebron and Union Township, the district provides fire and EMS service to Hebron and Union Township residents.

State dismisses child pornography charge against Newark man

Newark Advocate NEWARK - The Licking County Prosecutor s Office dismissed a felony charge against a Newark man after a judge suppressed some evidence in the case. Licking County court records show the agency in July 2019 filed a motion to dismiss a single pandering obscenity involving a minor charge that had been filed against Jason Farmer, 42, of Newark, following a suppression hearing a few months prior. The dismissal was recently brought to the attention of The Advocate. According to Judge Thomas Marcelain s ruling on the motion, the judge approved defense attorney Andrew Sanderson s motion to suppress certain evidence in the case, meaning it could not be considered during a trial.
