NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) â Speed limits could change around Nashville if a proposal makes its way through Metro Council. It aims to change the speed limit from 30 miles per-hour to 25 in certain areas.
The discussion to change the speed limit in neighborhoods will happen during Tuesday night s Metro Council meeting.
Walk Bike Nashville says this could force people to slow down and stop driving recklessly in Nashville neighborhoods. The group says speed determines how severe a crash will be and just a few miles per-hour difference can have a huge impact.

Even with the pandemic keeping many people at home and off the roads, 2020 was the deadliest year on record for pedestrians in Nashville. As of Dec. 16, 38 people were killed while walking in the city, surpassing 2019âs previous record of 32 deaths. At the beginning of 2020, Mayor John Cooper pledged the city to a Vision Zero Action Plan focused on eliminating pedestrian deaths. But that wasnât the only transit concern on the mayorâs mind. Weeks after the mayor pledged his commitment to Vision Zero, Metro organized a series of public listening sessions designed to collect feedback from Nashvillians on their transportation needs and priorities. That feedback helped inform Cooperâs transportation plan, released months later. While the new plan isnât as ambitious as past proposals, like former Mayor Megan Barryâs doomed multibillion-dollar overhaul, it still faced scrutiny and uncertainty from the

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Mike Osborne) The Nashville City Council Budget Committee gave Mayor John Cooper’s new $1.6 billion transit plan a chilly reception Tuesday night
The plan calls for extensive investment in the city’s bus system, along with synchronized traffic lights, a traffic control center, improved bike paths and sidewalks.
Several members praised Mayor Cooper for shepherding the plan through a lengthy public vetting process. But some members complained the plan lacked detail.
Councilman Bob Mendes called the proposal merely an outline, and not a “specific commitment to any amount at any time for any project.”
