A Republican effort to revive a bill in the final days of session that would offer immunity to some drivers who strike protesters and make it a felony to demonstrate in streets has failed for the year.
While the legislation had previously stalled in the Senate, it gained new traction last week after leaders in the two chambers agreed to allocate funding for it in the budget.
Similar bills had passed this year in Oklahoma and Iowa.
But senators, including the chairman of the judiciary committee, Sen. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, continued to express concerns about the legislation. Bell filed a last-minute amendment to tone down some of the charges against protesters and ensure that law enforcement would still investigate instances when a driver struck someone.
More Nashville neighborhoods to open slow streets today

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) â Starting Monday, 15 more Nashville neighborhoods will start to open âslow streets.â This initiative addresses neighbors concerns about speeding and overcrowding in parks and other public spaces.
The program started in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and has become popular. In 2020, Nashville had 21 miles of slow streets during the spring and the fall.
Starting today through May 17, 15 more neighborhoods will open these slow streets.
A slow street or soft road closure is a street where thru traffic is discouraged with barricades and signage. Local traffic, including delivery trucks and transit service, are still permitted to use the street and on-street parking is maintained.

Local transportation advocates on Saturday hosted a memorial service in honor of the 39 pedestrians who lost their lives in Nashville traffic accidents in 2020. It was the deadliest year for people walking our city s streets on record, surpassing 2019’s previous record of 32.
“We created this annual event to remember those who were lost, but also to recognize that these tragedies are not random or inevitable,” said Nora Kern, the executive director of transit advocacy organization Walk Bike Nashville. “They are happening on the same high-speed streets, they are happening at night, and they are happening in many of the same parts of our city.
