Nigerian Customs Service has explained the reason why its men shot and killed some residents of Iseyin on Thursday.
Residents said five persons were shot dead while some were injured when Customs men opened fire on some vehicles suspected to be loaded with foreign rice on Thursday
But the NCS in a statement on Friday claimed some rice smugglers hired hoodlums to attack its officers on lawful duty and injured some of its officers in the process.
The statement, which was signed by Theophilus Duniya on behalf of Ag. Controller, F O U Zone ‘A’, said one of its injured officers was abducted by the hoodlums with his rifle, and his colleagues in the process of rescuing him fired at the hoodlums, and three of them were killed.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) Federal Operations Unit, Zone A, on Thursday said three persons were killed when the unit repelled an attempt to abduct its officer on duty.
The Acting Controller of the Unit, Usman Yahaya, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Theophilus Duniya, on Friday in Lagos.
Mr Yahaya said that at 3.00 p.m. on May 13, some “dare devil smugglers” accompanied by thugs attacked a patrol team serving with the unit at Iseyin, Oyo State.
“The officers, who were on routine patrol, intercepted two Nissan Pathfinder SUV vehicles fully loaded with smuggled foreign parboiled rice at Iseyin.

The Sindh Anti-Corruption Establishment has started to probe allegations of irregularities and nepotism pertaining to examination results against the Hyderabad Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE).
ACE has sought complete details of all exams of the secondary school certificate and higher secondary certificate conducted in the past five years.
ACE Deputy Director Ghazanfar Ali Qadri has deputed an assistant director to conduct the investigation into allegations of bribes taken in exchange for handing out a better examination score. In a letter written to BISE, ACE has demanded answer sheets, detailed results of past years, lists of awards and the chairperson s approval for examination results.
