Interactive map shows Sussex areas with highest Covid rates

A HEAT map of the UK shows the areas which have reported the most cases of Covid-19 compared to their population in the most recent complete figures. The data relates to the seven-day period leading up to Christmas day, and the weekly Covid rates are expressed as the number of recorded cases per 100,000 population. Areas are split into Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOA) - a geographic hierarchy designed to improve the reporting of small area statistics in England and Wales, with each area having a minimum population of 5,000 and a maximum population of 7,200. Scroll down for the areas in Sussex, and the areas in Brighton and Hove, with the highest weekly Covid rates.

Coronavirus care home outbreaks behind rise in Stroud district

writes Leigh Boobyer. Gloucestershire’s public health chief Sarah Scott said the outbreaks recorded continued to show “relatively low” rates despite the increase. Frampton, Whitminster and Eastington, in the Stroud district, as well as Coleford, in the Forest of Dean, saw rising infection rates in the seven days to December 11. Frampton, Whitminster and Eastington saw 38 infections among the 6,775 population – giving it an infection rate of 553.9. And Coleford saw 57 positive coronavirus tests in the same period among its 10,819 population – leaving an infection rate of 523.3. Ms Scott, director of public health at the county council, said outbreaks in care homes were the cause of the increases and added they are “managing the situation actively”.

The Government map breaks down COVID-19 rates into smaller geographic areas, including nations and counties. At a lower level, it breaks them into Middle Layer Super Output Areas, or MSOAs, which are smaller, postcode-linked areas that are used for a range of Government statistics. Areas are colour-coded by their rate, with purples and blues being the highest, and greens and yellows the lowest. In our area, the MSOA with the highest number of cases in the week to December 15, when the latest figures were available, is Romsey Town which had 21 cases and a weekly rolling rate of 351.9 cases per 100,000 people.
