N/Assembly to consider constitution review report before 2022 budget — Lawan

Tue Jul 20 2021 Senate President Ahmad Lawan has said that the National Assembly would pass the amendment to the 1999 constitution when lawmakers resume from summer break in September. The federal parliament is currently amending the constitution. Hundreds of bills and memoranda are being considered by the review panel, which also had public hearings across the six geo-political zones and the FCT. The panel, according to its chairman is working on the report, which is expected to be presented for consideration and passage. Lawan, in his 2021 Sallah message, said the federal lawmakers would finish work on the constitutional amendment, transmit the outcome to the state Houses of Assembly for their consideration before considering the 2022 budget.

It warned of the impending poverty implications of this growing population, saying, “This is a frightening eventuality, more so in the context of increasing physical, cyber and fiscal insecurity.” The non-governmental agency noted the effort of government and politicians at national and state levels to address the looming poverty future for Nigeria’s population, including the commitment to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty. PACFah said, “That government has taken an economic response to Nigeria’s poverty present and future is a good thing worthy of praise, but it is good enough when disarticulated from a population policy.” It drew attention to the significance of birth spacing through family planning policy as part of national population policy to manage population growth.
