SVHS and CHS Music groups earn high ratings at District Festival

◆ Directors commend their students for strong work ethic and excellence amidst challenges. Music students from Star Valley and Cokeville High Schools participated in the District Music Festival in Pinedale April 28-30. Choir, band and orchestra musicians from high schools in the western region gathered to perform for judges who scored their prepared pieces and gave them feedback for future reference. Chamber Orchestra, the select orchestra at SVHS, scored 32.5 out of 35, which earned them a Superior rating. Concert Orchestra earned 31.5 points and the 9th Grade Orchestra walked away with 30 points, which qualified them for Excellent ratings. “The adjudicators had lots of positive feedback for our orchestra students,” said Lisa Barber, Orchestra Director at SVHS. “Dr. Griffith from the University of Wyoming worked with each group after their performance. It was a great experience for the students to work with a university conductor and hear commendation for the skills they

Thursday State Recap: Visser sets new State record

(Photo Credit: Kevin Koile) -State culminating events are happening across Wyoming with soccer teams playing in Cheyenne and track and field taking place in Casper. The big news on Thursday was Star Valley’s Peter Visser who broke the Wyoming State High School record in the 3200 Meter run by finishing with a time of 9:18.79. Visser won the event by nearly 200 meters with second-place finishing 35 seconds behind. Visser’s effort broke the mark of 9:21.29 set by Cody’s Brody Smith in 2015. He is also scheduled to compete in the 1600, the 800 and the 4 x 400 Meter Relay. Also competing on Thursday, junior Jesus Carillo-Zarate placed eighth in the Pole Vault with a height of 11’ 6” and the quartet of J.D. Morris, Lane Oesch, John Hunting and Zarate placed seventh in the 1600 Sprint Medley (200, 200, 400, 800).

Avail Valley work underway on U S 89 South of Alpine

Commuters from Star Valley to Jackson fill the road during high-traffic times on U.S. 89 between Alpine and Etna. The five-lane project will address the many potentially dangerous turn-offs and sudden stops as residents enter and leave the roadway. Contract crews with Avail Valley Construction are working their way north on the Etna North reconstruction project in Star Valley’s Lower Valley. The project will bring five lanes to U.S. Highway 89, between Etna and Alpine. This section of highway is heavily traveled by Jackson commuters living in Star Valley.
