Difficult trading period
Heineken UK on-trade director Stephen Watt said: “Throughout the pandemic, our priority has been to help pubs and bars through the most difficult trading period in generations and get them back on their feet, serve communities and be viable once again.
“It’s been a challenging time for the industry, but we have supported customers by absorbing costs related to restocking and maintaining workable cellars, investing in practical support and creating safe environments, while also offering a number of deferred or cancelled payments.
Star Pubs & Bars has responded to a petition, which calls upon the pubco to reverse its decision to take back the lease from current licensees at the Red Lion, Enfield Highway, north London, who have been at the site for almost two decades.
The petition, which had more than 5,000 signatures at the time of publication, was started a fortnight ago to help persuade the pub company to change their minds on taking the lease back and changing the pub into a managed operation.
Ray and Tracey Bell have run the site for the past 19 years, making it a “successful, local, community pub”, the petition stated.
The countdown to reopening is now in full swing and we are looking forward to a meal and a pint in our local pub garden.

Whether you already have a large garden or are looking to create some outdoor space, now is the time to start your preparations. Drawing on insights from our Star Pubs & Bars network, we have pulled together some top tips to help you reopen successfully outdoors. Star Pubs & Bars licensees on core leased and tenanted agreements in England will have to start paying rent in full from 21 June, following a period of discounted rates, the pubco has announced.
The company has extended its 90% rent concessions, which were due to end on 1 March, to 16 May, leaving 10% payable by licensees.
From 17 May (when pubs are able to reopen inside with restrictions in place if the Government’s roadmap is successful) until 20 June, the discount will be reduced to 10% in rent concessions, leaving 90% payable by licensees.
Star estimated the combination of these rent discounts means about half (50%) of rent will be due for the month of May.
Star Pubs & Bars is to extend its 90% rent reduction for pubs on core leased & tenanted agreements until mid May, before easing the concessions as the sector unlocks.
