The hair and beauty black-market poses a grave risk to salons and the reopening of the beauty industry, if left unchallenged, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Senator Regina Doherty and other Fine Gael Senators met with representatives from the hair and beauty industry this week and were alarmed to hear of the impact the black market is having on the sector.
Speaking after the meeting, Senator Doherty said: “The hair and beauty black-market is putting legitimate businesses at real risk of not being able to fully reopen in the coming weeks. Many salons are struggling to retain staff, with the vast majority saying they are still trying to recruit following Covid-19.
Credit card companies must offer fairness and flexibility to travel agents – Buttimer

Credit card companies need to respect current licencing arrangements when demanding large cash deposits from travel agents adversely impacted by Covid-19, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Following yesterday’s meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications Network, Committee member Senator Jerry Buttimer said: “It is worrisome and disappointing to have heard from Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) representatives that some credit card companies are taking a very hard line and demanding substantial security cash deposits from travel agents.
“Covid-19 has had a profound impact on the travel industry, and fairness and flexibility must be prioritised to ensure that agents have the best possible chance of getting back on their feet over the coming months.
Conway: use our vaccination centres to give the HPV jab
CONCERNS shared by the family of the late Laura Brennan about the effect Covid-19 has had on the roll-out of the HPV vaccine have been highlighted in the Seanad.
Senator Martin Conway has urged the government to “think outside the box”, suggesting Covid-19 vaccination centres could be used to administer the HPV vaccine alongside drafting in pharmacists.
The Fine Gael Senator recalled the “phenomenal work” that Laura Brennan did in promoting the vaccine prior to her death.
“We are all fully aware of the immense challenges that have been posed by the Covid-19 pandemic but this vaccine is extremely important. It is critical to the future health of girls and boys,” he said.

It is time we listened to women with Hyperemesis and provided the support needed, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Senator Garret Ahearn raised the issue on the floor of the Seanad this week, seeking for a drug to treat the condition to be reimbursed on the medical card and drugs payment scheme.
Senator Ahearn said: “One per cent of pregnant women suffer from hyperemesis during their pregnancy. The condition causes severe nausea and vomiting and can be extremely debilitating.
“Three drugs are used to treat this condition of which only one is available in Ireland, Cariban, however it is not licensed.
